At 1:49 pm, November 27 in Nottingham England, Prince Harry of Wales proposed to American actress, Meghan Markle. The couple was at their apartment in Kensington Palace when he got on one knee and  they later revealed all the details of the engagement.

“It was a cozy night,” Markle told the BBC in an interview. “We were roasting chicken. It was just an amazing surprise. It was so sweet and natural and very romantic. He got down on one knee.”

The couple dated for over a year prior to the engagement, meeting through friends in London in July 2016. Their relationship status wasn’t announced until October 2016 when Markle was interviewed for a new issue of Vanity Fair.

“We’re in love. I’m sure there will be a time when we will have to come forward and present ourselves and have stories to tell, but I hope what people will understand is that this is our time. This is for us. It’s part of what makes it so special, that it’s just ours. But we’re happy. Personally, I love a great love story,” Markle said.

They made their first public appearance December 1, in Nottingham after the engagement, and the bride-to-be’s showstopping engagement ring was revealed. Markle’s engagement ring, custom made by Prince Harry, was crafted of diamond from Botswana and two stones from Princess Diana’s jewelry collection.

“It’s incredibly special to be able to have this, which sort of links where you come from and Botswana, which is important to us. It’s perfect,” Markle said in an interview.

Most famous for her role on the USA drama “Suits” and Markle announced her resignation from her acting career after Prince Harry’s proposal. Earlier in the year, she moved from Toronto where the program was filmed to London. She even plans to apply for citizenship in the U.K.

The wedding date is set for next spring at St. George’s Chapel at the Windsor Castle. If they do follow through with the wedding, Markle will become the first American to marry into the royal family since Wallis Simpson wed King Edward VIII, almost eight decades ago.
